The
Nuts and Bolts of Successful Projects

TWO-DAY
WORKSHOP
MONDAY, JUNE 6 -TUESDAY, JUNE 7
Community
Project by Bonnie Lee Holland
Concord
Hill School
2nd and 3rd Grade Classes
Quilts of hand painted
fabric with resists
Artist-in-Education residency project funded by the
Maryland
State Arts Council
Four
hand painted and tie quilts form a sequence that students see
every day as they walk down a hall to the school library.
Students worked in small groups to develop plans for the quilts
then made same size collages which acted as mock-ups for the painting
which was done with textile pigments. Tie quilting was done
during a quilting bee where teachers and parents assisted the
children.

Artists
and Communites: The Workshop
The
focus of the workshop on Artist and Communities goes beyond
the formal teaching that
many of us, including myself have done in colleges, public and
privates schools, and arts
organizations to explore many variations of artists coming
out of their studios or inviting other individuals into their
studios to interact with
community.
As an administrator in various
positions, I helped set up drop in space at an arts park where
anyone could come to make art from recycled materials, developed
an artist-in-residence program in a mall space, organized a mural
fence around a long-term construction project, developed many
other hands-on projects and
programs often in non-arts spaces.
You may already be working in
the community but may want to explore different possibilities
and approaches especially when this work is often in fluid situations
where personal flexibility and knowledge of group process helps
make successes. I plan to share concrete information from artists,
administrators, and organizations working in this field as well
as from my own experience.
