Friday Fibers Roundup

This week’s Friday Fibers Roundup features three upcoming textiles exhibitions, an embroidered mystery box, as well as lace-like works created from painstakingly placed dandelion fluffs.

Kim Paxton Mary Oliver’s Question, artist-made wool, silk felt, hand embroidery, found metal coat hanger, buttons, wood, 40.5″ x 33.5″.


1) Materials: Hard + Soft features the work of Kim Paxton (pictured above), Elizabeth Odiorne, Susan Iverson, George-Ann Bowers, Ben Venom, as well as many artists and craftspeople working in metals, ceramics, fiber, wood, glass, paper, and new/mixed media. The exhibition is on display at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center until May 6th, 2017.

2) “I Talked to the Artist Who Sold Me a $150 Mystery Box Full of Weird Junk” by Andrew Cohen looks at the ever-changing work of Mark DeLong and the experience they shared when Cohen bought one of DeLong’s stitched mystery boxes (via Vice).

3) Amsterdam-based German artist Diana Scherer explores how the sensitive roots of plants can be molded and shaped into intricate, man-made forms in her series Interwoven, in collaboration with biologists and ecologists from the Radboud University in Nijmegen, Netherlands (via Treehugger).

4) This video from The Verge shows how you can take your drawings and turn them into laser cut clothing.

5) Felt Decoded Wool: Nature’s Technology, curated by Janice Arnold, examines the humble origins and evolutions of felt as a material. The exhibition is on display at the Museum of Craft & Design in San Francisco, CA until June 4th, 2017.

6) In The Sleep Series, Iranian artist Maryam Ashkanian embroiders portraits of people sleeping, which she then turns into pillows. The projects stems from a fascination with dreams and the contrast between our conscious and unconscious perceptions (via Creators).

7) “Artists as Hoarders” by Mirka Knaster looks at a variety of artists using massive accumulations to create their work as well as the psychological reasoning behind why creatives have a tendency to hoard (via Exploring the heArt of it).

8) Im/material: Cloth in Collaboration with Nature by Jenine Shereos features a collection of sculptures and photo documentation of installations Shereos has created over the years. The show can be seen at the Hampden Gallery at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst from February 26th–March 27th, 2017.

9) This beautiful video illustrates some of the beading and embroidery techniques used to created couture fashion garments.

10) Duy Anh Nhan Duc meticulously arranges dandelion blooms to create lace-like works that reference the universal urge to scatter a dandelion’s seedlings with a single blow as a child (via Colossal).
