Tamryn McDermott is a mixed media artist concentrating on fiber techniques and materials. McDermott’s work involves the process of investigating time, language and history through fragmentation, repetition and mutation. McDermott holds a BFA in Painting and Sculpture and a MA in Art History and Arts Administration from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA. She is currently an MFA student living and teaching in Columbia, MO.
My work examines the reconstruction of history through abstraction. History is understood through interpretations, which change, over time. Using an ever-evolving visual vocabulary, I begin with historical documents and archeological artifacts and transform the narrative through abstraction. I ask the viewer to think of history as a constructed narrative evolving through a continuum of loss, recovery, preservation, interpretation and invention. I am interested in how history is interpreted, through literary and architectural remains, at different points in the chronology. My work illuminates the frustration and continuous pursuit of the historical truth by sifting through contradiction and misinterpretation. These interpretations inform our personal understanding of the past. I approach my work as a scholarly researcher, viewing history as a palimpsest, full of a diverse layering of interpretations. Through the lens of Roman history, my goal is to elicit a thought process that forces the viewer to examine the infinite nature of history. Using layering, translation and deconstruction, I aim to participate in the historical dialogue and reveal contradictions, ambiguity, and new truths: an alternative fiction based on recovery of cultural artifacts and loss.
