New
Tools Educational Series
Four
edited documentaries covering a two-day lecture and demonstration
at the 1995 New Tools/No Limits Surface Design Conference
in Portland, OR. The series includes Mechanical
and Chemical Resists, Devore, Discharge Printing with Vat
Dyes, and Cloque . The Special Effects Manual
includes recipes for New Tools series.
Relevant and important technical information is given in lecture
format by Joy Bouthrup.
Jason Pollen offers demonstrations and interpretations of
the volumes of information Joy shares throughout the series.
Intermediate to advanced artists, designers, and instructors
will find the information useful in understanding the hows
and whys and new possibilities of dye and resist chemistry.
These are not step-by-step how-to tapes, but documents of
information which assume a base of experience. They are probably
not appropriate for beginners without access to supplementary
instruction. Joy Boutrup's 28-page Special Effects Manual
gives the recipes for the techniques.
Demonstration
Series
Five
edited documentaries covering one-day demonstrations at the
2003 and 2005 Surface Design Conference in Kansas City, MO.
The series includes Imagery Transfer Parts I and II
with Wendy Huhn, Discharge Using Thioureadioxide
with Reactive and Acid Dye Grounds with Jason Pollen
and Joy Boutrup, Printmaking with Disperse Dyes
with Lisa Grey, and Balancing the Surface
with Yoshiko Wada and Joy Boutrup. Each tape includes recipes
and instructional handouts. For beginner to advanced artists.
Imagery Transfer Part I covers fabric through the
photocopier, foil transfer, Thermofax and puff paint adders,
and paperless paper to fabric and gel. Imagery Transfer
Part II covers solvent transfers, heliographic printing,
and carved rubber stamps.
Jason and Joy demonstrate Discharge Using Thioureadioxide,
including direct application and immersion. Acid and MX reactive
dyes provide the color in cotton, linen, and silk. The tools
for application include assorted brushes, the Airpen, and
thermofax machine.
Balancing the Surface: Using natural and synthetic
materials coupled with traditional and innovative methods,
the two instructors demonstrate felting and burnout. Details
about the chemical structure of wool and the felting process
are given by Boutrup.
Printmaking with Disperse Dyes: Lisa Grey explores
the unique properties of disperse dyes as applied to paper
or fabric with printmaking techniques. Monoprints using a
heat press are enhanced or altered by under-painting, texturing,
screen printing, and fusing fabric to the paper surface. Using
an inkjet printer with sublimation inks is also demonstrated.

Health and Safety: Working
with Textile Dyes and Chemicals , Joy
Boutrup
This
50-minute production features a health and safety demonstration
by Danish Textile Engineer Joy Boutrop. In a clear and straight-forward
manner, Joy covers topics such as measuring powder dyes and
liquids safely, working with pigments and emulsion using appropriate
protection, and minimizing the risks associated with caustic
soda and lye solutions in the textiles studio. This is an
excellent educational resource, especially for those new to
the filed of textiles dyeing and printing.
