Fantasy and a magical aura encompasses Venice, and the adjoining islands of Murano, Burano and San Michele -- the surprise that such a place exists in our modern world. Although increasingly crowded with streets filled with tourists, forty years ago, it was quiet, particularly in the morning, when the details hidden in the jigsaw maze of streets were filled with unexpected secrets.

In 1830, amid controversy and opposition, President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act, forcibly removing thousands of Native Americans to reservations west of the Mississippi River. Jackson’s goal was to “separate the Indians from immediate contact with settlements of whites,” claiming, “the policy of the Government toward the red man is not only liberal, but generous.” Their struggles transcend time, and can be connected to hardship, injustice or discrimination experienced today. Stories of Native American women are an essential part of our diverse American fabric, as a dark reminder of the strength and courage required in the face of adversity.

Reflecting on past memories, this is a remembrance of people and places, connected by love, utilizing the rose as a symbol. Enlarging many of the images in varying sizes created new concepts for dyes and overlays. The architectural elements, from photos taken in Italy, reflect on the wonder and surprise of finding roses, peeking through the cracks of ancient walls, much like a tender memory, emerging vivid and unexpectedly.
