Introduction to Natural Dyes with Natalie Stopka

Participants in this weekend intensive will be introduced to the world of beautiful, accessible, and sustainable botanical dyes. Learn the basics of selecting and preparing fibers, extracting color from a variety of plant materials, and fixing natural dyes to fabric. We’ll discuss the history of natural dye use, and explore some contemporary applications of pattern. You may bring along natural fiber materials you wish to experiment with in the dye pot. Myrrhia Resneck uses Stoll industrial knitting machines to create products for Bolt Threads in Emeryville, CA. In this experimental workshop, Skins and Skeletons, participants will first learn methods for building skeletal structures with rigid and semi-rigid materials like reed, rattan, bamboo, wood, and wire. Methods will include various lashing techniques, chaotic plaiting, and wire construction processes. Next, we’ll cover a broad array of approaches for building skins onto these structures using gut, rice papers, elastic fabrics, and nets.
