Deadline: May 31, 2018. Artists working in any discipline may apply for the Arts/Industry 2019 program. Each year, up to 12 artists are accepted for 3 month residencies in the Pottery or Foundry areas of the factory. This creatively designed class blends together the art of narrative storytelling with textile design techniques. Karen believes everyone has a story and that the act of sharing stories is extremely healing for both the storyteller and the audience. We will explore surface design techniques that include natural dyeing, printing, painting, discharge and stitching on both new and repurposed cloth. Create book structures that use fabric, paper, collage and your personal collections. Combine hand stitching and machine sewing with paper collage and traditional book binding techniques. Explore photographic printing on fabric; create pages with pockets, zippers and buttons; incorporate found objects; utilize relief printing on cloth and paper; and more. Explore this time honored craft on a 4-shaft loom that allows patterning and play. Designed for beginners, and using pre-wound colorful carpet warp, this workshop will take participants through the warping process and teach them to understand patterning, reading a draft, color interaction, and how to weave good cloth. Plain weave, twills, rib and basket structures, and ‘color and weave’ will be covered. All materials will be provided and participants will take home a sampler.Find out more »
