Focus: Fiber 2019 is a biennial national juried exhibition of contemporary fiber art. This exhibition is co-sponsored by the Textile Art Alliance of the Cleveland Museum of Art (TAA), and Kent State University Museum. In this experimental workshop, Skins and Skeletons, participants will first learn methods for building skeletal structures with rigid and semi-rigid materials like reed, rattan, bamboo, wood, and wire. Methods will include various lashing techniques, chaotic plaiting, and wire construction processes. Next, we’ll cover a broad array of approaches for building skins onto these structures using gut, rice papers, elastic fabrics, and nets. Deadline: February 28, 2019. This exhibit will feature contemporary 3D artworks exclusively. The 3D artworks may be, but are not limited to wearable art, dimensional quilted items, vessels, and sculptural works. Wall-hung artwork will be allowed but must be 3-dimensional per the depth requirements listed above. There will be no video submissions.
