Painting Silk Scarves with a Botanical Motif with Debra Dolsberry

This workshop teaches silk painting using transparent dyes, Resistad and other water-soluble resists. Working with the primaries magenta, yellow, blue, plus black, students will explore color theory as they learn to mix transparent color both on and off the silk. Painting techniques of layering transparent colors over other transparent colors will be demonstrated. Additional techniques using water, alcohol and a variety of salts will be used to create texture. In this beginning-intermediate workshop, students will be guided in drawing with linear resist to create foregrounds and backgrounds with dye painting. We will create a scarf design by using a botanical motif such as the ginkgo leaf. Students will learn methods of how to set the color so that it is permanent. In class we use a dye-set concentrate and discuss alternative methods of setting the dye.
