Abstraction in Jacquard
Quebec City, April 30, 2019 – to conclude its season, Materia presents Abstraction in Jacquard from May 10 to June 23, 2019. In this exhibition, curator Jeanne Couture brings together nine passionate textiles artists who will make you consider the Jacquard loom through an unusual point of view. The opening of the exhibit in the presence of the artist on Friday, May 10, 2019, from 5:00 p.m.
For over a year, the curator followed the creative process of these unpublished works and accompanied the artists in a reflection on the space setting of the textile medium. Abstraction in Jacquard renews the ways of proposing Jacquard, sometimes exposed in a sculptural way, sometimes in an intimate, assertive or conceptual way. The artist’s statements question in a particular way the medium, surpassing the know-how required by this technique that is practiced by a select few. Indeed, there are only twelve Jacquard looms active in the province and few people know how to operate this mechanical loom. Its plastic possibilities are vast, and they have been exploited to their fullest through the aesthetic propositions of this collective.
Materia is proud to continue its mission by disseminating the work of nine artists from Fine Craft and Visual Arts, including several emerging artists: Anie Toole, Anne-Marie Groulx, Audrey Anne Béliveau, Marie-France Tremblay, Marie-Hélène Martin, MariePier St-George (Quebec), Annie Descôteaux, Sophia Borowska (Montreal) and Meghan price (Toronto).
