Art Knitting: Creative Beginnings and Contemporary Directions (illustrated talk)
Knitted art sculptor Eve Jacobs-Carnahan will speak about the history of knitted art at the Great Northern Yarn Haul Kickoff Party at Must Love Yarn. Artists have been making serious art using knitting for decades. In this presentation, you’ll learn about Mary Walker Phillips’ innovative abstract knitting in the 1960s and find out how other early experimenters like Katharine Cobey spread the idea of art knitting. You will learn about the explosion of art knitting in the 1990s. You will see how artists have used knitting to address gender stereotypes, conceptions of domesticity, environmental issues, mass consumerism, and community. In the hands of skilled artists in North America and Europe, knitting has taken many forms from sculpture to performance art.
