Custom Machine-Knit Socks Workshop
Instructor: Meghan L. Kelly
Custom socks! Whether using a v-bed knitting machine like a Passap, or a flat-bed machine with or without a ribber such as a Studio/Singer/Silver Reed, you will come away with three pairs of socks. The first pair will be basic crew socks, introducing you to the building blocks of socks on the knitting machine. The second pair of socks will be a variation on the “no show” sock and will illustrate a different heel and foot construction. The third pair will introduce various colorwork and decorative stitches to provide interest and incorporate a mix ‘n match technique style for a truly custom sock. Participants should be comfortable with knitting on a machine and are welcome to bring their own flat-bed knitting machine if they own one. Knowing how to handknit will be beneficial but not required. Some, but not all, of the techniques that will be demonstrated and discussed in class include short-row heel pocket and toe box constructions with tips for closing holes, afterthought heels, flat-bed ribbing techniques vs. hand-knit ribbing, Kitchener stitching, mattress stitching, washing & blocking, etc.
