Dyed in the Wool: Making the Best Yarn for your Projects
Instructor: Kate Sarah Mitchell
Explore the interaction of color and fiber at the most fundamental level in textile arts. Learn to spin wool and blend it with other fibers like silk and cotton, making yarns to weave, knit or sculpt. Using the properties of your fibers, explore the results of natural dyes applied at each stage of the fabric-making process. You will learn how to use a drop spindle and spinning wheel; how to prepare fibers; how to create and test design options; and how to achieve a range of colors with natural dyes and blending techniques. Familiarity with fibers is helpful but no previous spinning or dyeing experience is necessary. Someone who has basic spinning skills can still benefit from the dyeing and fiber preparation techniques.
