Embedded | Group Exhibition

Opening reception: April 1, 6-8PM EST

This group exhibition will feature three artists from across the U.S., Bryana Bibbs, Sam Dienst, and Andrea Vail who use tapestry weaving in a variety of ways while drawing upon unique perspectives and inspirations for creating.

Bryana Bibbs (b. 1991) is a Chicago-based textile artist, painter, and art educator who earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in Fiber and Material Studies at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work comes from her struggles with depression, anxiety, relationships, self-validation, and how to deal with everyday occurrences. She is the founder of The We Were Never Alone Project – A Weaving Workshop for Victims and Survivors of Domestic Violence, a 2021 – 2022 Chicago Artist Coalition HATCH Residency Artist, and serves on the Surface Design Association’s Education Committee. Bryana’s work has been on view at The Evanston Art Center (Evanston, Illinois), ARC Gallery (Chicago, Illinois), The Bridgeport Art Center (Chicago, Illinois), The Wayback (Chicago, Illinois), Room482 (Brooklyn, New York), and Chicago Artist Coalition (Chicago, Illinois). https://www.bryanabibbs.com/

Sam Dienst is an artist and weaver currently living and working in Detroit, Michigan. She earned her BFA in Fiber in 2016 from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She graduated in the spring of 2021 with an MFA from the Fiber program at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work is featured in the New American Painting MFA edition for January 2022. She has exhibited in numerous shows around the country. Sam’s recent work has centered around a form of self-portraiture using objects and items from her day to day life as jumping points for investigation. The final works are tapestry weavings whose abstractions and flattening further complicate and dissociate the viewers from the original sources, creating a metaphysical experience. https://www.samdienst.com/about

Andrea Vail investigates contemporary American society and its objects — specifically home goods deemed stylistically obsolete, or unattractive by the standards of 21st century mainstream culture. Hinged on textile traditions and techniques, her practice materializes as tapestry, woven sculpture, and collaborative exchange. Vail has received awards from Arts and Science Council; North Carolina Arts Council; HappeningsCLT Visual Artist Grant; CultureWORKS; and residencies with Goodyear Arts, McColl Center for Art + Innovation, and Elsewhere Museum. She is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University (MFA) and UNC-Charlotte (BFA). Vail lives and works in Western North Carolina. https://www.andreavail.com/
