CONCEPTUAL FIBER ARTIST, CHRISTINE SULLIVAN, TO PRESENT A VISIONARY
EXHIBITION AT AURELIA GALLERY
SANTA FE, NM, September 19, 2023 — Christine Sullivan and Aurelia
Gallery are proud to present the upcoming exhibition by conceptual
fiber artist, Christine Sullivan.
Christine Sullivan harnesses the tactile warmth of wool felt to
subvert and re-imagine deeply rooted commercial, political, and
religious paradigms. Her work cleverly questions and overturns these
norms while infusing an element of fun and whimsy.
Sullivan’s multi-disciplinary approach incorporates fiber, paint, and
screenprint to weave together a powerful visual language that compels
viewers to engage in a thought-provoking dialogue. Through her
intricate felt abstract geometric creations, inspired by her earlier
hard-edge paintings, she breathes new life into ubiquitous symbols and
logos, shedding their familiar meanings and endowing them with an
enigmatic allure that captivates and intrigues.
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Consider, for example, Sullivan’s reinterpretation of the iconic
McDonald’s golden arches—an emblematic symbol of fast food and
consumer culture. In her hands, this symbol transcends its original
connotations, inviting viewers to explore uncharted realms of
interpretation. Each piece in this collection draws the audience into
a deeply personal and thought-provoking exploration of familiar yet
enigmatic motifs.
Sullivan further pushes the boundaries of wool felt by transforming it
into a canvas for screen printing, adding layers and felt shapes that
challenge conventional thinking and conventional art mediums.
ABOUT CHRISTINE SULLIVAN
Christine Sullivan, a New Mexico-based artist, embarked on her
artistic journey after a successful career as the owner of a graphic
design practice in New York City, where she collaborated with
prestigious clients such as the Guggenheim Museum and the Lower
Manhattan Cultural Council. Today, she resides in Santa Fe, dedicating
herself wholeheartedly to her multi-disciplinary and conceptual craft.
Sullivan’s artistic contributions have already left a significant mark
on the Northern New Mexico cultural landscape. In 2022, her work
“Choice” was featured in Albuquerque as part of the “Soul of a Nation”
billboard project by Save Art Space. Earlier that year, she created
“Hope Dies Last,” an art installation in Santa Fe’s Railyard, paying
homage to the legendary social justice advocate Studs Terkel.
In 2020-21, Sullivan received a grant from the City of Santa Fe for
“Felt During COVID,” a community art project showcased at the Public
Library gallery, with proceeds from a virtual auction benefiting the
Navajo Nation COVID Response Fund. In 2020, her work “Flowers Grow Out
of Dark Moments—Corita Kent” graced a billboard outside SITE Santa Fe
as part of the museum’s “2020 Silver Linings” project.
