Mindfulness: stitch and indigo with Thomas Roach
In this fast paced world full of distractions we sometimes need to slow down in order to be present and mindful in the moments of our lives. Slow, repetitive, relatively simple tasks like hand-stitching can quiet the mind and allow space for reflection or meditation. Come explore the connections between stitching, indigo and mindfulness. No previous experience necessary. There is nothing fancy here, and this isn’t complicated embroidery – just simple stitching. We will first use stitches to help us create in the cloth some texture that we will then capture in the indigo dye process. We will use natural plant indigo to dye, building layers of blue – a slow magic unto itself. Once the fabric is washed and the first stitches removed, a second layer of stitching will enrich the patterning. You may even wish to add a further layer of tactility with a finger labyrinth. This is an opportunity to slow down and make something satisfying – with your own hands.
