Teacher: Ana Lisa Hedstrom
Japanese Shibori is an amazing tradition. Ana Lisa has found inspiration for over 40 years as she adapts the traditional concepts to contemporary dyes, surface techniques and applications. In this class we will learn the traditional techniques of stitch resist, arashi pole wrapping, and itajime folding and clamping. We will experiment with the sewing machine to stitch through layers of folded fabric to create a resist. Shibori is perfect for quilters, and we will look at ways to cut our lengths of fabric or make modular pieces for creating piecework. Students will also produce several scarves. We will work on cottons and silk using fiber reactive dye and silk acid dye. Ana Lisa will bring samples of traditional Japanese Shibori and examples of her own work to inspire and educate.
