Warp Ikat with Natural Dye on Cotton Workshop
Instructor: Wendy Weiss
Warp ikat is the art of systematically applying dye to selected areas of the warp threads prior to weaving. Participants will learn how to prepare their warp so they can bind their own geometric design onto their cotton thread and achieve their desired set of shapes or patterns before even setting up the loom. This introductory class will cover how to create an ikat design on graph paper, wind the warp and systematically bind the design. You will treat cotton yarn with tannin and alum prior to dyeing to ensure fast and bright colors, dye yarn in natural dyes, set up the loom to align the resist dyed pattern, and weave a warp faced structure. You should know basic weaving vocabulary and experience weaving on a floor loom is desirable, but not essential, as all steps for setting up the loom to weave ikat are covered in the class.
