Indigo Dyeing with Natalie Stopka

Focusing on plant derived natural indigo, participants in this intensive workshop will prepare two organic indigo vats for dyeing both protein and cellulose fibers. We will create an array of swatches and explore resist dyeing techniques reliant on the particular working qualities of indigo. Fabric will be provided, but you may bring along materials you wish to experiment with in the dye pot! No previous experience required.

Conjuring the Narrative with Textiles with Karen Hampton

This creatively designed class blends together the art of narrative storytelling with textile design techniques. Karen believes everyone has a story and that the act of sharing stories is extremely healing for both the storyteller and the audience. We will explore surface design techniques that include natural dyeing, printing, painting, discharge and stitching on both new and repurposed cloth. Each participant will create both a banner and a repurposed garment.

Introduction to Weaving with Daryl Lancaster

Explore this time honored craft on a 4-shaft loom that allows patterning and play. Designed for beginners, and using pre-wound colorful carpet warp, this workshop will take participants through the warping process and teach them to understand patterning, reading a draft, color interaction, and how to weave good cloth. Plain weave, twills, rib and basket structures, and ‘color and weave’ will be covered. All materials will be provided and participants will take home a sampler.

This class will introduce the participant to an appreciation of Navajo (Dine) weaving by creating a small rug on a traditional upright loom. Dine weavings are internationally known for their unique designs and techniques using vegetal, natural and aniline dyed handspun wool. Skins & Skeletons: 3D Textile Construction with Mo Kelman

In this experimental workshop you will learn methods for building skeletal structures with rigid and semi-rigid materials like reed, rattan, bamboo, wood, wire, found materials and recycled frameworks. Methods will include lashing techniques, formal and chaotic plaiting, wire construction and netting. To build skins onto these structures, techniques for working with gut, rice papers, elastic fabrics, wax, and stiffeners will be presented. Woven Lace Structures with Crystal Gregory

Delicate lace structures create translucency and serve as a filter of light and negative space. In woven cloth, warp threads are anchored at both ends then crossed in straight lines by weft threads creating right angles at the intersections.
