March is Membership Month with SDA!
March 2023 is an exciting month for SDA! Check out the offerings below and mark your calendars! SDA invites members to bring a friend to any and all of these free events. Everyone is welcome and we can’t wait to meet you!
Let’s play! Join us on Zoom for SDA’s Happiness Bingo Play two rounds of specially customized SDA Bingo PLUS mingle in the Intermission Party Rooms. Fun fact – March 20th is the UN International Day of Happiness and the first day of spring during the year of the Rabbit in the Chinese zodiac.

WHAT IS ONLINE BINGO?
- How to play? You’ll get a customized online Bingo card to play for each game. A Bingo card has a grid of 25 boxes (five columns and five rows). Before the game starts, an example of the winning pattern will be shared. You’ll need to block out all the boxes needed to make the winning pattern.
- How do I get my Bingo card? Once game night starts, we’ll share a link in the Zoom chat for you to generate your own unique Bingo card. You’ll play the game online during the live event (with one window open for your Bingo card and another window open for the Zoom meeting).
- Don’t worry! If you’re still not sure, please join the Zoom meeting 5-10 minutes early and we’ll be happy to help.

SDA’s 45th Anniversary Edition
Monday, March 27 at 2pm ET
Join Elizabeth Kozlowski, Surface Design Journal Editor and Guest Editor (and former SDJ Editor), Patricia Malarcher, as they discuss the Spring 2023 Journal that celebrates SDA’s 45th anniversary. This special edition delves into the Journal archive highlighting important moments in nearly a half century of the publication.

Introducing SDA Meetups!
SDA Meetups connect individuals from around the globe in virtual groups based on disciplines and/or shared interests. Makers from all backgrounds and experience levels are valuable participants, and joining in a Meetup is a great way to make a positive impact by connecting with the SDA community.
As part of Happiness March, Meetups scheduled in March are open to the public! Check out the topics and times available in March for these free casual, Zoom-based get togethers. Participation is limited to 12 individuals per Meetup.
SDA Meetup: Social Hour with the SDA Board

Join in and meet with SDA Board members for a casual get-together. The Board is excited to connect with you!
SDA Meetup: Fiber Art with a Social Message with Eve Jacobs-Carnahan
Date and time: Wednesday, March 22 from 7-8 pm ET (convert timezone)
We’ll talk about making and exhibiting art that carries a social message, where to find inspiration, the significance of materials, and how to translate ideas into artwork. Topics might include the challenge of community engagement or artists in the field.
SDA Meetup: Fabric & Fiber Reuse with Felicia Reed
Date and time: Sunday, March 26 from 7-8 pm ET (convert timezone)
Join us to discuss repurposing fibers for techniques such as felting, sewing and creating collages. We will discover ways to use what we create with recycled and repurposed fibers. Learn new methods of working with textiles to spark creativity.
SDA Meetup: Mixed Media with Jennifer Lee Morrow
Date and time: Thursday, March 30 from 7-8 pm ET (convert timezone)
This group is designed for any artist working with several materials or mediums with techniques related to or derived from traditional textile processes. We will explore topics of interest to the participants from the conceptual to the practical.

FAQ
- How can I sign up for a Meetup? Click on the “Sign up here” button under the Meetup you want to attend. You will be directed to a sign up form. You will receive a confirmation email with the zoom invite. You will need to sign up separately for each meetup in a series.
- How do I get the zoom link? Your Meetup zoom link will be included on the confirmation email.
- How many people can sign up? Participation is limited to 12 individuals per Meetup.
- How can I get on a waitlist? If the Meetup is full, you will be prompted to add your name to the waitlist.
- How long does a Meetup run? Each Meetup has three sessions, one session per month for three consecutive months.
- Do I have to attend all three sessions of the Meetup? No, given scheduling realities, it’s foreseeable that not every participant will be able to attend every meeting. You may sign up for one, two, or three Meetup sessions. There are separate sign up forms for each session.
- How can I cancel my sign up? You can email events@surfacedesign.org.
- How can I volunteer to become a Meetup host? Contact events@surfacedesign.org. SDA Meetup Hosts receive resources and support to structure their meetings, while remaining self-guided and flexible based on each group’s unique dynamic.
