FUTURE TENSE 2021 celebrates the creative work of student artists, designers, and makers working with or inspired by fiber or textile materials or techniques. This exhibition offers a glimpse into the future of contemporary fibers by presenting the very best work being made by students in the field today.
From tiny pedestal works to room-sized installations, from contemporary practices to ancient ones, the scope and range of submissions made the selection of only 38 pieces out of 200+ artworks a significant challenge.
Events of this past year have been life-altering for us all. This was revealed by entries that expressed ideas ranging from depression to delight, from anxiety to meditation, belonging to schism, and all things in between. We believe that using our hands to create physical objects is a healthy, often therapeutic way of processing thoughts, passing time, reifying the ineffable and communicating ideas. This is what we do as artists; how we absorb, distill and comment on our world, our time, how we push humanity forward.
