Eco Printing with Oksana Danziger

Eco-printing is a technique where plants, leaves, and flowers leave their shapes, color, and marks on fabric. The basic principle of eco-printing is that various leaves and plant materials (fresh or dried) possess tannins that have the innate ability to print permanent color onto fabric fibers when combined with the proper technique and procedure. Eco-printing is directly related to the art of dyeing with natural plant materials. The process usually involves steaming to create a distinctive print. We will discuss how to identify and collect the plants for eco-printing and their preparation. We will make a sample chart to compare how different materials like cotton, silk, and other fabrics react to natural dyes. We will also learn about scouring and mordanting textiles to prepare them to dye and modifying agents for print variation. We will explore the “blanket” technique, where we affect the color-imprinted leaves by applying additional fabric soaked in different solutions. At the end of the weekend you will have two silk scarves completed with different techniques.
