Explore the possibilities of woven wire for sculpture. Using variations on traditional wire basketry techniques, you will learn multiple weaving techniques to make everything from small baskets to large scale installations. Particular attention will be paid to pattern and line quality in 3D work. Possibilities for including found objects and mixed media will be covered, as well as how to incorporate wire weaving into your other art making practice(s). The first half of the workshop will focus on demos and time for participants to make their own sample “library” to refer to in their future work. The second half will involve one-on-one check-ins and problem solving as you delve into individual projects using the techniques you’ve learned. At the end of the workshop, we’ll have a friendly group critique to provide feedback on completed and/or in-progress work and help create clarity for future projects. No fibers or basketry experience is necessary.
