Future Fabrication: Exhibition in Print 2017

As we continue to celebrate SDA’s 40th anniversary, we wish to recognize the diversity of talent working within the field of fiber art and surface design with our second annual Exhibition in Print. This year’s theme–Future Fabrication–asks artists to think about how innovations related to fiber and textile materials might shape our future. With works that consider advancements in technological innovation, material exploration, as well as provide a glimpse into the future through concept and form, Future Fabrication will be a great followup to last year’s Crafting Community. We also have two amazing jurors for the upcoming EIP–Richard Elliott and Kathryn Hall.


Richard Elliott is Associate Professor and former chair in the Textiles program at California College of the Arts in Oakland, CA where he has been teaching since 1999. We are very excited to have Richard on as Co-juror as well as Guest Editor for the Winter 2017 EIP Surface Design Journal.

Richard Elliott Untitled: Fraternal Twins, hand-dyed hog gut (sausage casings), 48” x 34” x 3”.

His work with image transfer techniques on paper and digital and hand constructions using hog gut (sausage casings) investigates the abstracted beauty of the normally unseen cellular structures, systems and irregular patterns hidden within the human body.

Richard lectures on his work, juries exhibitions, teaches workshops, and is Secretary of the Board of Directors of the 45th St. Artists’ Co-operative in Emeryville, CA where he lives and works. A past recipient of a California Arts Council Artist-in-Residence grant for working in textile media with developmentally challenged adults at Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, his work is in private, public, and corporate collections, including the California State Department of Health Services.

Kathryn Hall is Curator at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft in Houston, Texas where she is responsible for developing and overseeing HCCC’s exhibitions and related programming. She previously served as the Windgate Curatorial Fellow at HCCC from 2012 to 2015. Kathryn’s unique perspective is also one we are excited for with her to Co-juror with Richard.

She has recently curated many exhibitions at HCCC, including: Annie Evelyn: Multiple Impressions (2017), United by Hand: Work and Service by Drew Cameron, Alicia Dietz, and Ehren Tool (2017), Charlotte Potter: Glass Armory (2016), and Dining and Discourse: A Discussion in Three Courses (2015).

Kathryn is a scholar of contemporary craft and material culture, and has contributed to Metalsmith Magazine as well as Studio Potter Magazine. She currently serves on the ClayHouston board, an organization that supports ceramic artists working in Houston and the surrounding area.

The inclusion of both Richard and Kathryn’s perspectives, added to the great work being made in the textiles field, will for sure make for one interesting and engaging Exhibition in Print.
