STAND UP: Democracy in Stitches
In this uncertain, even frightening time in our country, what is important to you? What will you stand up for?
This is a crowd-sourced community art project. Using stitch / fiber / thread / yarn / fabric (but see ***NOTE*** below), you are invited to create small pieces with the unifying theme STAND UP—for truth / reproductive rights / LGBTQA+ / science / the planet / libraries / due process / immigrants / racial justice etc., etc., etc. There is no limit to how many pieces anyone can make—if it is important to you, stitch it!
Preferably, all pieces should involve thread or yarn or textiles, including but not limited to stitching, quilting, embroidery, appliqué, weaving, knitting, crocheting, and felting. Use of recycled/repurposed materials is encouraged but not required. ***NOTE: IF FIBER IS TRULY NOT YOUR THING, PLEASE USE WHATEVER MEDIUM YOU PREFER.***
All pieces must be positive and respectful—no hate speech, no violence, no threats, no disrespect!
Anyone may participate—young, old, accomplished fiber people, those with no stitching experience, and everyone in between. Pieces may be as simple or as complex as you wish.
Please share this project with others! You may stitch alone, or in a group. Involve children, or people who may not be able or inclined to participate in other forms of protest or resistance. Stitch with your friends, your family, or total strangers. Tell others about this STAND UP project and encourage them to participate as well!
Display your STAND UP pieces! Send me photos (indiart@yarndancevt.com) identified with your first name and town or state and I will post them on the Democracy in Stitches Facebook and Instagram pages (include your FB or IG handle if you wish to be tagged). However, if identifying yourself feels unsafe for any reason, you may submit your work anonymously. Share on your own social media. Create exhibits of STAND UP pieces in your local library or other venue. Mount your pieces on cardboard and carry them at rallies and demonstrations. Create your pieces on clothing and wear them proudly!
Most importantly, STAND UP!
