The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art is hosting a solo exhibit by Iowa City artist Astrid Hilger Bennett. Hilger Bennett has spent a lifetime creating fiber art. Trained as a printmaker, her interest in fiber art and “making things” began in childhood and grew into her passion for creating and fostering creativity in herself and others. With a deep interest in surface and the act of mark-making on cloth, Bennett uses only hand painted, monoprinted fabrics in her work, occasionally adding ink into the mix with drawing from the natural world. She has also been a cultural and small business advocate, serving as longtime manager, marketing director & co-owner of Iowa Artisans Gallery in Iowa City, as well as serving as Board Co-Chair of the international contemporary textile nonprofit, Surface Design Association. Bennett is also deeply committed to mentorship, fostering younger generations and creating and sustaining diverse groups of artists.
