Why Don’t You Simply (Move the Rock), 2022
Wool, embroidery floss, polyester velvet, fibrefill, a rock. 8" x 11" x 9"
Why Don't You Simply Move (The Rock), is a pair of textile eyes coming from the base of a rock. It resembles both a cartoon creature crushed by a rock that has fallen on it, and a pair of eyes attached to a brain. It is about petrifying pressure that can be caused by external assumptions, and refers to a sentiment that dismisses unseen difficulties caused by mundanely painful experiences. I was once asked why I didn't respond to anxious feelings by relaxing, overlooking the fact that anxiety is often caused by an inability to relax. My experience has been that trying harder petrifies further, as the weight bears down.
