This hand stitched work is based on a photograph I took of a cloud filled sky at Waitpinga Beach. At the time, I was taken by the dramatic high key flurry of clouds. They completed the wildness of Waitpinga Beach. The photograph captures the volumous clouds dominating the picture plane with a slither of beach holding them from drifting away. Waitpinga Beach rests in Ramindjeri and Naringerri land. It is a stretch of rocky coastline jutting into the ocean between Encounter Bay and the township. By choosing to slow stitch, I allowed the work to take on a rhythm and pace of its own, evolving over time. The contoured top edge and fringed side resolved eventually after the work hung, pinned to the studio wall for a while. It is challenging to represent the experience of standing and experiencing the wildness of Waitpinga Beach. This work is a homage to the environment, the earth, sea and sky.
