The Algae Mantle, 2024
Alginate Biomaterial 36" X 48" X 12"
The Algae Mantle was created from Dextras’ experimental research into fabricating a biomaterial out of alginate which is derived from seaweed. It was conceived as a transformation cape worn by a dancer during the FlowILM event at the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington NorthCarolina.

Jacket constructed from bast fibers for the short film: Chronos, time of sand. Meant for a desert environment, the front plate and sleeves are designed for ventilation. The articulated hood acts as a sun hood.

Prototype for a short film about floods. I look for organic matter, found in wetland environments that I can transform into provocative and sustainable ornamentation. As living organisms, both rice crops and fungi are part of the mutually beneficial symbiotic relationships found in wetland ecosystems.
