Hand-dyed Shetland sheep & Huacaya alpaca wools, thread, sequins, pins 36 x 54"
The Wild Way blends traditional and contemporary methods, starting with each color that is individually hand-dyed using wool from the artist's family farm. Utilizing the traditional "quilt sandwich" method, the process is turned on its head by dissolving the top and bottom layers of the "sandwich" after sewing to reveal the usually hidden middle layer. Here, the "meat" of the sandwich takes center stage, featuring carefully laid out wool in a method the artist likens to painting with wool and drawing with thread. With free motion embroidery, every stitch is guided by the artist's hand, featuring flora and fauna native to the Midwest.
