Image Statement: Ave Atque Vale (Hail and Farewell) is the title and closing phrase of a poem by Catullus. He is mourning the loss of his brother in battle but this phrase could be what our endangered southern resident orcas are silently crying as they pass by ever less frequently. I translated the words into morse code and wove them directly into the piece using a summer and winter pattern. In this piece I chose black and white to symbolize ink on a page and to resemble writing.
