Image Statement: Maps inspired the artwork. Layers of fabric and texture were built up to reflect the way landmasses and our planet have formed. I worked improvisationally. I quilted two pieces of painted fabric, cut them apart, placed them on a foundation fabric, added new solid-colored fabrics, laid tulle over the top, then quilted again. The quilting lines reference the elevation lines of topographical maps. I hand-embroidered the top edge with a buttonhole stitch to emphasize the organic nature of the theme.
