Experimental Basketry in Metal

Through the lens of metal materials like nickel, this workshop will take you through the process of creating forms utilizing the basketry technique of coiling. Participants will learn the steps necessary to prep their metal and specific cold connection methods. The culmination of these efforts will be a unique object all their own. Most importantly, this workshop will include plenty of time for experimentation. You will be encouraged to play!
All sessions will be held online over Zoom and recorded. Recordings will be emailed to participants within 24 hours of the session. Recordings are available for one year. Live sessions are scheduled as follows:

About Your Instructor
Aminata Conteh is Metalsmith whose practice hybridizes the histories and traditions of Metalsmithing & Jewelry with basketry weaving. Her work draws inspiration from the collapsing histories that exist between her lived experience as a first generation American and her Sierra Leonean lineage. Conteh received a BFA in Metalsmithing & Jewelry from Maine College of Art & Design and she is the recipient of a 2021 Wingate Lamar Fellowship from the Center for Craft in Asheville, North Carolina.
