Domestic Dreamer

This exhibition showcases screen printing on textiles. Susan M. Clark screen prints on cotton or silk and then adds hand painting and embellishments.

Many of the works in this show imagine the private dream world of the imagination that emerges while we are in the safety of our homes doing the most mundane and routine chores.

The theme spans table settings and evocative images highlighting the hard labour of women in support of historical 1821 migration from Switzerland to the Red River area of Manitoba via the Hudson’s Bay.

One standout piece, Let’s Not Forget the West positions the National Gallery of Canada on the “eastern” side of the composition. Inspired by the artist’s daydreams, this work reflects a campaign advocating for broader online access to NAC programs. Clark champions inclusive access, urging the National Gallery to extend participation opportunities beyond in-person events in Ottawa.

This exhibition continues Clark’s exploration of domestic textiles – damask tablecloths, aprons and centrepieces – reimagined as art centred around domestic work and home life.
