SDA’s 2025 Online Workshops
Learn new skills and techniques, get inspired, and find ways to apply what you learn to your current studio practice, all while connecting and creating within SDA’s community.
Spanning Saturday to Saturday, learn, grow, and meet like-minded textile enthusiasts in our online workshops featuring 2 hour instruction sessions on the weekends and a midweek meetup to troubleshoot, share progress, and gather in community with other participants. All workshop recordings will be available for one year. Take one workshop or take them all!

Cross Structure Binding: Two Ways with Erin Fletcher
May 3 - 10
Create a hand bound book rooted in tradition with endless opportunities for embellishment. We’ll learn two ways to make a cross structure binding and explore texture atop the leather covers.
Introductory Bojagi with Youngmin Lee

Invite happiness and well-being into your life with our Introductory Bojagi workshop! Learn traditional Korean stitch and seam techniques with fabrics from your stash.
Exploring Dye Techniques with Astrid Hilger Bennett

Paint, print, and process your very own yardage in this surface design workshop! We’ll cover fiber reactive dye basics and monoprinting techniques as well as practical home and studio setup tips and tricks.
Experimental Basketry in Metal with Aminata Conteh

Play and experiment with basketry techniques and metal to create a unique item all your own! We’ll use coiling to create sculptural works of art using metal materials and explore cold connection methods.
Luneville Embroidery with Ksenia Semirova

Step into the world of Luneville embroidery! Known for its refined detail, you’ll learn foundational essential skills and create your very own embellished motif using stitching, beads, and sequins that can stand on its own or be incorporated into other work.
Yardwork with Hadley Clark

Create fabric that serves as your own personal archive! Using scraps, waste, and other soft materials, we’ll generate yardage that can be used for future projects. Through cutting, piecing, stitching, and ironing, we’ll transform cast offs into surfaces with meaning.
Soft Sculpture with Natalie Baxter

Bring three-dimensional forms to life! From sketching and cutting to sewing and stuffing, learn how to translate your ideas into sculptural works of art. Explore the power of soft form in this beginner-friendly workshop.
Building Form with a Single Strand with Andrea Vail

Learn how to create forms with a single strand through looping, knotless netting, and crochet! Focusing in particular on transitional spaces, learn how to merge materials, troubleshoot challenges, and develop narrative within your work.
Sculptural Paper Casting with Leah Aegerter

Transform paper pulp into unique cast-paper sculptures! Starting from dry pulp, we’ll cover reconstituting, blending, dyeing, and casting sheets that we’ll then mold around found objects in our environment.
Textile Sensors and Soft Switches with Victoria Manganiello

Transform your textiles with electronics and switches! Incorporating conductive thread, snaps, and buttons, create interactive components to your work through traditional sewing and knitting techniques.

In the event that you must cancel, please email events@surfacedesign.org within one week of your initial registration in order to receive a refund. A $50 administrative fee will apply.
Format
Each workshop spans eight days and is structured so that the majority of instruction will take place on Saturdays for a total of four hours – two hours each Saturday. A one hour moderated midweek meetup between each Saturday session will allow for workshop participants to further discussions, troubleshoot, and work in community with one another. Workshop instructors are not required to attend meetups but may if their time permits.

Recordings will be made available to each participant for one year.
